Project Ihlen

by Noah Bryant

PROJECT IHLEN is my attempt to learn the basics of type design through the digitization and research of rare 19th century typefaces made by the incredible designer Herman Ihlenburg. If you’ve ever eaten Cup Noodle ramen, watched any of The Godfather trilogy, or drank Ketel One vodka, you have first-hand experience with his work! My goal is to find and digitize these forgotten typefaces and remake them for use in the digital age. The results of my efforts are two revival typefaces named Zeitgeist and Eldritch. Both of these typefaces were redrawn using a combination of original lead type and 19th century specimen books. The fonts are available now on my website.
